Advising the Yang di-Pertua Negeri on all matters pertaining to the native system of personal law and adat in Sarawak, where and when required. Providing advice and guidance to District Officers, relevant public and private agencies in the interpretation of personal law and adat. Providing advice, guidance and various forms of non-financial assistance to local and foreign researchers and scholars. The Majlis archive contains various types of oral tradition material, traditional musics and songs kept in the forms of tapes and transcriptions in original languages.  A few of these have been translated intoEnglish and Bahasa Melayu. The Majlis has limited published documents.  These include:  Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak Ordinance, No. 5 of 1977; Adat Iban 1993, Adat Bidayuh 1994; Adet Kayan-Kenyah 1994; Adat Lun Bawang 2004; Adat Bisaya 2004 Native Courts Ordinance 1992; Native Courts Rules 1993; Native Customs (Declaration) Ordinance, 1996. A collection of Iban folk-lores, Jerita Tuai Enggau Ensera in Iban was published by The Ministry of Social Development in 1995. Various drafts of codified adat of minority native groups are awaiting gazettement and publication. The Majlis has also a large collections of folk-lores which have been systematically compiled but not published and are available for reference material.
