To be the leading centre for the repository of knowledge on customary laws and oral traditions of the Dayak of Sarawak.
Mission
The mission of the Majlis is to preserve and nurture the customs and traditions of the Dayak of Sarawak so as to maintain order and development of the community.
Objectives
To preserve the customs and traditions of the Dayak for posterity.
Organisation Chart
The Majlis Adat Istiadat is headed by the Ketua Majlis (Head of Council) and the Timbalan Ketua Majlis (Deputy Head of Council). The Secretary to the Majlis is the Chief Administrative Officer of the Majlis who is responsible for the day to day administration of the Majlis, co-ordination and supervision of research activities, and implementation of decision made by the Board of Majlis.
Members of the Board of Majlis comprise the Ketua Majlis (Head of Council), a representative of the Chief Ministers Department and not more than six other members representing the various Dayak groups.
There are four Research Sections: Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu and Melanau. Each Research Section is headed by a Research Assistant.

General Functions
To act as a centre for the collection, collation, storage and dissemination of material on cultures and traditions of the Dayak.
To initiate preliminary studies and research into the various customary laws or adat of the Dayak and make recommendations to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri (the Governor) as the needs arise to standardize and codify the customary laws or adat of the Dayak. To conduct study and research on such matters as the Majlis (Council) may think fit, for example, oral tradition.
Specific Functions
To promote and carry out programmes for study and research on the customary laws or adat of the Dayak.
To collect, transcribe and store oral tradition, such as myths, legends, ethnohistory and migration, epics, folklores, chants, prayers, poem and others.
To maintain liaison with other bodies, both public and private, involve in the administration of customary laws and adat on the concepts and functions of customary laws and adat in Dayak society.
To provide guidance in the interpretation of customary laws or adat whenever there is a conflict of interpretation in the Native Courts.
