The Majlis  Adat Istiadat was established on 1 October 1974, and placed under the Chief Minister’s Department.  The functions of the Majlis are contained in the Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak Ordinance, Number 5 of 1977.

There are three other ordinances that relate to the work and functions of the Majlis: The Native Courts Ordinance, 1992, the Natives Courts Rules, 1993 and the Native Customs (Declaration) Ordinance Cap. 22 of 1996 which replaced the Native Customary Laws Ordinance Cap. 51 of 1955.


CLIENT CHARTER

We pledge to provide quality and satisfactory services to our clients through implementation of the following activities in line with the duties and functions as enshrined in the Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak Ordinance 1977:-
  • To complete the codification of all the Adat of the Natives by the year 2012 and from then on, where necessary, to initiate their amendments, application and enforcement in the Native Courts;
  • To conduct at least ten courses a year on the Adat for Presiding Officers at all levels of the Native Courts, Assessors and other relevant Officers, so as to equip them with knowledge and skills required in the application and enforcement of the Adat throughout the state;
  • To hear and resolve conflicts on matters relating to the interpretation of the Adat of the Natives within one week after receiving the report or request;
  • To be ever ready in giving expert advice, opinion and guidance in the implementation of the Adat of the Natives;
  • To serve as a perpetual leading centre for the collection and dissemination of information on the Adat of the Natives;
  • To continuously conduct, control and co-ordinate all activities relating to the study and research on the customary law and Adat of the Natives;
  • To continuously improve the quality of services rendered by Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak to the public.

PIAGAM PELANGGAN

Kami berjanji untuk memberi perkhidmatan yang berkualiti dan memuaskan kepada pelanggan kami melalui pelaksanaan aktiviti-aktiviti berikut selaras dengan tugas-tugas dan fungsi yang termaktub dalam Ordinan Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak 1977:-

  • Menyiapkan pengkodifikasian kesemua Adat Bumiputera menjelang tahun 2012 dan seterusnya membuat pindaan, di mana perlu, untuk penggunaan dan penguatkuasaan di Mahkamah Bumiputera;
  • Mengendalikan sekurang-kuranngya sepuluh kursus setahun mengenai Adat bagi Pegawai Penguasa berbagai Mahkamah Bumiputera, Pengapit Mahkamah dan Pegawai berkaitan, untuk mempelengkapkan mereka dengan pengetahuan dan kemahiran yang diperlukan dalam penggunaan dan pelaksanaan Adat di seluruh negeri;
  • Mendengar dan menyelesaikan konflik mengenai perkara-perkara berkaitan dengan tafsiran Adat Bumiputera dalam tempoh seminggu selepas menerima laporan atau permohonan mengenainya;
  • Senentiasa bersedia untuk memberi nasihat, pendapat dan panduan dalam pelaksanaan adat Bumiputera;
  • Berperanan sebagai pusat berkekalan terunggul bagi pengumpulan dan penyebaran maklumat tentang Adat Bumiputera;
  • Mengendali, mengawal dan menyelaraskan secara berterusan segala aktiviti berhubung dengan pembelajaran dan kajian ke atas Adat resam kaum Bumiputera;
  • Memperbaiki secara berterusan kualiti perkhidmatan yang dihulurkan oleh Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak kepada orang ramai.
